Some scratchboard stuff

I've been doing some scratchboard lately for an adaptation of The Pied Piper of Hamelin. I haven't had as much time as I would have liked to work on them and I feel like I've been spread too thin over the number of illustrations and the time I had to finish them in, and also struggling with the medium to start with too. But even though I would have liked them to be better I've kind of enjoyed using scratchboard. (I'll post more of them later)

Just some sketches

White Cloud Worlds Vol 2

I haven't been on my blog for a while so this is a little late in posting! But I was really privileged to have some of my work included alongside the incredible artists in White Cloud Worlds Volume 2, which came out last month. It's available in bookstores in Australia and New Zealand.

melbourne morning

This is just a rough painting I did while procrastinating the other week. It was the view I got my first morning waking up in Melbourne, I definitely didn't do it justice though, sorry Melbourne!

speed painting, human planet

I did this speed painting a few weeks ago of a scene from the human planet trailer. For anyone that doesn't know it's a very recent BBC documentary (came out in the UK in January). If you haven't seen it already, check out the trailer here. Looks amazing!

quick painting

this is just a painting I did yesterday when I had some spare time, it's pretty rough and could definitely use more work, especially the hair, but I didnt want to spend long on it so made myself stop after a certain amount of time, even though my perfectionist self is screaming to fix up all the crappy areas (so all of it really). it turned out looking a lot like my little sister, which wasnt at all intentional.

zombies!

This is my last portfolio piece and what could be more fun to draw for it than decaying flesh, exposed brains and maggots?

Fishing Village 2

So this is my 2nd illustration of the same place in a different mood, the 1st was meant to be lively and this one dark and decayed.

Fishing Village 1

Sorry if you've seen this one already (I had it up for a day last week then pulled it down to make some adjustments). I did 2 versions of the same place with different moods, so this is the first one and I'll post the other one soon. Most of my other work has been more character based so I feel like I learned HEAPS from doing this which is great. So hopefully my next ones will be faster and better!

WotC 1

At the moment I'm working on a portfolio for Wizards of the Coast and I'm very fortunate to have the incredible Warren Mahy helping me out with this. So I'll be posting these up over the next little while. This is a crop of one of my first images, it might still end up getting changed. I'm also extremely lucky to often get help and advice from the insanely talented Aaron Beck, who's always very generous with his time. So thanks Aaron and Warren, I really appreciate it!

Massey Exposure Exhibition

Starts this Saturday in the museum building tea gardens and runs for 2 weeks.  If you're around come check it out, although it's probably not in my best interests to be advertising it as I'm sure my talented classmates will be showing me up! :)

religious values series

Redemption
Redemption through guilt - Indoctrination of children to believe they are born with tainted souls and must seek salvation from their sins .

Faith
Blind faith, denial and destruction of knowledge (And a good excuse for me to draw my friend Rebecca Kereopa eating eyeballs!)

Devotion
Devotion to God through self-sacrifice, not just literal giving up life but sacrifice of the individual and sense of self for the collective.

Justice
My take on the last judgment and moral absolutism, the way all your thoughts and actions throughout your life can be weighed/measured and in the end your soul is either good or bad, spend either an eternity of bliss in heaven or an eternity of pain and suffering in hell.

Imagine That Exhibition

An exhibition of the winning illustrations of a competition organised by Learning Media and Massey University.  Each year Learning Media chooses one students work to publish in a school journal, this year I was lucky enough to have my illustrations chosen and my friends Vaughan Flanagan and Rebecca Kereopa were runners up.  If you're interested in checking it out it's going till August 15th in the Massey tea gardens in the museum building.

Here's the link to the article about it on the Prodesign website

Concept Art Workshop

I just did a great concept art workshop taken by Paul Tobin and Warren Mahy where the brief was to reinterpret The return to Oz. I set it in a brothel in India, Dorothy would be a young Indian girl living in the brothel who would eventually become a prostitute and Oz is her imaginary escape world. This is a design for Tic Toc, in the original film he's a soldier robot in Oz who is constantly breaking down, in my version he would exist in the real world and in Oz, in the real world he'd be a crippled beggar boy (like the image), in Oz he would be a cyborg, his back and leg braces, crutches etc would become part of his body and an advantage making him stronger rather than a handicap.  There's still things that bug me about this image but oh well!

"Raven Boy", a novel by Darren Clark

I've just started working on illustrations for this novel by the very talented Darren Clark, which is also being picked up by a London theatre company to be adapted as a play.  I'm lucky enough to have permission to post my work for this before its published, which is great.  These are the first couple of character illustrations I've done for it.
